The Blue Marble

Gen Z promises to pick up the baton and serve in the role of Earth guardians.

New genome research reveals the Aborigine culture in Australia is the oldest civilization on Earth. It dates back 75,000 years. Their stories, passed down orally through thousands of generations, gives them a pulpit to learn from. In their story of creation, Father Spirit told the Mother to go and give form to Earth and then awaken all the sleeping spirits of plants, animals and insects. When that was done, she gave birth to two humans, telling them to live in peace and be guardians of Earth and all its creatures. The Mother then took form as the Sun and left.

Most reading this will interpret the tale as an allegory. But is it? We can relate this ancient tale to current events! Especially in the month of April when Earth Day is celebrated all over the world. In 1972, the crew of Apollo 17, the last manned mission to the moon, turned their cameras around and shot a photo of the Earth suspended in the blackness of space. It was called “The Blue Marble”, and it became the most iconic and widely distributed image in history.

When I first saw the Apollo 17 shot of Earth it changed my perspective and my perception of what it means to live on this “Blue Marble.” There had been other partial photographs of the Earth, but I’d never seen our planet like this before. It was fragile. It was vulnerable. It seemed alone in the vastness of space. I would stare at it for hours, becoming part of something much greater than me. Sometimes my reactions to the image were overwhelming and tears would flow. The image launched immense feelings of unity and oneness. I couldn’t prove it, but I knew on a serene inner level that whatever was happening in one location on the planet was affecting everyone else living on it.

The astronauts who took the photo said they felt it was a living organism. We know that to be the case now. All the interrelated systems and weather patterns that The Mother created were intricately balanced. Earth pointed her axis to the Sun and the seasons changed and flourished for both hemispheres. But sadly, decades after the photo was taken, satellites and drones show the damages that the older “guardians of Earth” have produced.

There’s still hope. The living organism can and will self-regulate if humans renege on their guardianship. There have been five earth cleansings over the millennia. Science says we’re in the middle of a sixth one. But Gen Z promises to pick up the baton and serve in the role of Earth guardians.

On Earth Day 2023, The Blue Marble is in the hands of the youngest generations who are marching all over the planet. I’ve spent time with many who are in their early 20s. They’re not yet bogged down with political fervor or financial greed. They’re generally altruistic in their approach and they recognize that the actions of one group has a direct effect on all groups. They believe in what they’re doing. Their generation are the agents that will help The Mother will restore balance and harmony on the Blue Marble. It’s not a wish, but a certainty.
