Use Your Mental Super Powers, Part 2

by Rev. Marla Sanderson

“Change your thinking, change your life.”—Ernest Holmes

The Science of Mind philosophy embraces certain practices of mind: What you put out, you get back. What goes around comes around. Change your thinking, change your life.

In my first column on this subject (October, 2016) I introduced Henry and Lucille, representing the conscious and subconscious minds. It’s not that we have two minds, but we’re talking about two functions of the same mind.

Lucille is the subconscious, and has a mystical power that attracts people and situations to us. We don’t know the mechanics, but we are beginning to understand Lucille’s role in the creative process. It is powerful.

The Role of Beliefs

Our personal beliefs determine much of what we think, how we act, who we think we are, and what we deserve. They affect our general attitude, whether optimistic or pessimistic. Lucille picks up ideas as we go through life, and many become beliefs. They can limit us or set us free.

Beliefs act as an autopilot and affect our quality of life, relationships, prosperity, friends, successes and failures.

Some people can’t seem to get a break. Others succeed every time with little effort. Could it be a belief about themselves or what they deserve? Or maybe a belief about what’s hard and what’s easy?

Your conscious mind, Henry, deals with real-world stuff. Thinking, planning, walking, talking, deciding, doing, etc., are a big part of Henry’s “to-do” list. Henry also influences Lucille. As “guardian of the gate,” Henry can filter out negative ideas before they become beliefs. He can nourish Lucille with positive messages—and even reverse negative ones. Henry can attract good things to us.

But Henry can also attract the not-so-good. If he likes being grumpy and pessimistic, he’s more likely to reinforce negative ideas. He can tear down our self-esteem, focus on the bad side of everything, and attract lots to be grumpy about.

Henry can choose and change beliefs. It’s easy to do. The only thing difficult about it is to remember to do it.

Your Superpowers of Thought, Imagination and Opinion

Take charge of your thinking because it’s creating your life. Feed yourself positive thoughts that change limiting beliefs.

Imagination, if unchecked, can change a slight worry into terror. It can also change a dreary life into one of great joy.

Opinions do more harm than good. Everyone has them and yours are nothing special. Neither are mine. Here are a few simple things to try.

#1 – When you find yourself expecting the negative, change your mind. Say “Cancel!” and choose a thought that makes you happy. Every time.

#2 – Talk nice to yourself. Don’t call yourself clumsy or stupid. If somebody else said these things to you, it would hurt your feelings. Stop hurting yourself.

#3 – Write some affirmations or positive statements to set your life in a favorable direction. Carry them around and read them several times a day to feed your mind some positive thoughts. The more often, the better.

#4 – Imagine the life you want to create. Picture it in great detail. Take a few minutes each day to visualize it. Draw pictures or make a vision board with pictures and words clipped from magazines. Put it someplace you’ll see and look at it often.

#5 – Imagine yourself letting go of anything that holds you back. This could be intangibles such as habits, thoughts or concepts. Or they could be tangible like people, situations and objects.

#6 – Don’t feed your mind negativity. Give up depressing or horrific movies, books and TV shows. Embrace the upbeat and positive.

#7 – Opinions are hard habits of mind that promote lazy brains. Give ’em up. All you can. Especially the ones you treasure. Opinions limit thinking and creativity. Keep your opinions soft and your mind open to new possibilities.

Practice using your mental superpowers, and you’ll notice a general improvement in many areas of your life. Take charge of your thoughts and beliefs until it becomes a habit. You will strengthen your ability to create a positive future with your thoughts and imagination.
