Demystifying Mediumship: Working with Guides and Spirit Specialists

By Rev. Spencer Rouse

Mediumship can help us break through the barriers of the mundane to explore awe-inspiring spiritual vistas, connect to other realms of existence, and provide access to healing energies and healing specialists in spirit. It is a discipline that can lead seekers to deeper insights about Self, the nature of being, and Source (God), as well as provide a profound experience of fulfillment and connection with the universe.

To appreciate what mediumship can offer us, we first need to make the distinction between a psychic and a medium.

A psychic “perceives” information while a medium “receives” information.

A psychic obtains impressions through an extension of his/her “normal” senses. A medium is a psychic who also can act as an intermediary between discarnate entities (i.e., people who have died) and the living.

I studied with Rev. Dorothy Flexer, an accomplished trumpet medium (one who works in trance with a metal cone-shaped “trumpet” to facilitate audible voice channeling of spirit entities). Her guidance changed my life: She was a teacher, healer, and leader with conservative values. Even though she was arguably one of the most proficient mediums in the world, she maintained a low public profile. She chose to use her gifts “at home” to teach her church members how to balance their material lives and how to heal themselves and others with the help of spirit guides and the principles of “right living.”

Following is a paraphrased summary of the principles she taught, which can help facilitate healing in all aspects of our lives right now:

1. Love is the creative force of all life. Love is God in manifestation and exists everywhere and in all things.

2. We have free will and power of choice. We are responsible for every aspect of our being. We shape our own future.

3. The power of our words, thoughts, and feelings will come back to us like a boomerang. If we send out thoughts that are unkind, destructive, or negative, we will reap the results. They will come back to us.

4. For every action, there is a reaction on the material plane, not just on the spiritual plane.

5. There is always an energy that seeks to bring balance and harmony at the physical, mental and spiritual levels. When we lose something through no fault of our own, this energy will bestow something new to compensate for it; perhaps something not directly related to our loss, but it will help balance the loss.

6. Like attracts like. If we tend to be positive and kind, we will attract people and opportunities that are helpful and positive. If we constantly send out negative vibes, the vibration within us and in our auras will reflect this and act like a magnet to bring more of the same into our lives.

7. When we unselfishly give to others in terms of service, kindness, prayers, healing energies, positive thoughts or material resources, it will be returned to us, magnified and timely, in a form that we need.

Practicing these principles and studying under Rev. Dorothy’s tutelage, my life began to change in positive ways. I was able to shift my energy field, raise my personal vibration and open up to new guidance that has blessed my life. Looking back over the past 30-plus years, for instance, I can remember many times when one of my spirit guides, Dr. Ritter, respectfully steered me away from foolish choices and encouraged me to keep the faith, even until the 11th hour when, sure enough, a minor miracle would occur.

Here’s one such story: Once when purchasing a home, my family was faced with a seller suffering from a severe case of separation anxiety. As a result, he introduced many delay tactics. We had sold our home already and had a deadline to move. Tension mounted as the whole deal teetered, and we had no other viable choice. Thankfully, I was given encouragement by Dr. Ritter until finally, with maybe a week to spare, we closed and moved into our new home. Through this and other experiences, I learned trust and faith in higher guidance, and this connection helped me understand that we are never alone, never without support and healing energy from the spirit realms.

Our spirit guides are always working on our behalf, even if it takes more time than we anticipated on the earth plane.

If you doubt this, consider the following story:

Doctor’s Orders

Many years ago I met a medical doctor who was interested in discussing metaphysics. He was a natural scholar and researcher, and we made an instant connection, even though we had philosophical differences in our beliefs in the physical world. We talked about the many phases of mediumship, what books to read, “how this whole thing worked,” etc. He had question after question. Although he preferred a scientific approach to life, something about my work engaged his imagination—even though he liked to lead the discussions and was fond of his own interpretations!

Unfortunately, he was not well physically, and his health deteriorated over the years. We talked about the world-renown healer John of God, who works with an armada of spirit doctors. Eventually my friend made two trips to Brazil to visit John of God for healing. He was impressed by the experience, and there were positive results, but he didn’t hold onto the gains long-term.

Several years ago, a fellow medium told me that this doctor friend and I would work together, but given the differences in our approaches to healing and his skepticism about mediumship, I could not understand how. Years went by and our affiliation never came to pass.

Not too long ago, his condition put him in the hospital, and he transitioned. I attended an open-message mediumship session the same week, unaware of his transition. The facilitating medium turned to me and said, “My name is Stephen, spelled S-t-e-p-h-e-n, but I have someone (in spirit) here whose name is S-T-E-V-E-N. He says he wished he had learned more about this stuff when he was on earth.” I could feel my friend’s energy in the room, and I knew he had passed. He was already as alert as ever in the spirit realms!

Interestingly, the medium conducting the session worked with similar energies as the John of God spirit team. He showed us how to call in a highly qualified spirit medical doctor who had also attained the spiritual advancement necessary to overshadow and direct us when we healed others. He explained that this particular spirit doctor would act as the head of a team, and he would call in spirit medical specialists to help us when needed on the physical plane. (These helpers will be working to progress spiritually because we are always learning at the soul level—even when we are not in a physical body.)

For the better part of that week, I could feel Steve’s energy around me. He was visiting. He had a message for me, and he did not leave until I got it! Steve will be working as a medical doctor with the John of God team of spirit doctors. He also wants to be included in the team as I work with healing mediumship. The prophecy is finally unfolding. Steve and I will be working together, and I look forward to sensing his energy as our new healing partnership unfolds.
