Trade in Those Puny Thoughts for Great Ones

by Rev Marla Sanderson

“And be not fashioned according to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, and ye may prove what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”—ASV Romans 12:2

This ancient text from the bible is a formula for happiness and success.

In today’s society, it’s hard not to be “fashioned according to this world.” You are subject to the homogenizing influence of Movies, TV, music and social media 24/7. We get constant conditioning to think alike, act alike, speak alike and like what everyone else likes.

We learn to work at things, go after stuff and try harder. We jump on the treadmill and hope for the best. Whether it’s love, money or stuff—we all want some.

We all develop our own ways to get what we want. Some people charm, some manipulate. Some create tremendous good in the world and others suck it all up. Some work hard, others lie, cheat and steal.

No matter what action we take, we often find nothing has changed. The new relationship looks like the last one. The new job is as stressful as the old one. The programs on the new super 3-D HDTV are as boring as those on the old set.

This is where the “renewing of your mind” comes in.

If you take the old consciousness into a new situation and expect different results you set yourself up for more disappointment.

Thought is creative. Trade in your puny thoughts for great ones—your puny ideas for better ones. As thoughts and ideas grow more positive and expectant, so will your life expand accordingly.

It’s both simple AND easy. Become more aware of your day-to-day thoughts. Stop judging yourself. Don’t think of yourself as anything less than a glorious and worthy expression of the Infinite Creator.

If you trip, you don’t need to call yourself a klutz. If you make a mistake, it doesn’t mean you’re stupid. If you say something that doesn’t go over well, you’re not unlikable. Think well of yourself. It isn’t conceit—it’s the Truth.

With a “renewing of mind,” things get easier and come about in the most amazing ways. You find yourself in the right place at the right time, or notice an opportunity you might have overlooked before.

You deserve the good things of life. That’s what “the good and acceptable and perfect will of God” means. It’s something better than you see now.

The “something better” represents a possible future for each of us. No matter how good things get, this “perfect will of God” combined with higher-level thought will lead to a better situation than you now have.

It’s not just positive thinking. It’s a Law.
