How to Awaken the Hero Inside of You: 3 Ways to Overcome Obstacles

by Rebecca Edwards

“Your vision will become clear only when you can look into your own heart. Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakens.”— Carl Jung

1) The TRUTH

How many times have we heard that the truth can set us free? But, as with all freedom, it can be painful in the beginning. It even can be downright scary. Perhaps the scariest thing of all is the fear of change. This fear can be the very thing that may keep us stuck grinding against our spiritual will. Change requires a lot of hard work, but I am here to tell you, IT IS WORTH IT! It takes a certain amount of grit to get honest and face our fears. We can step fully into our truth the moment we open ourselves up to being vulnerable; as we stand hand-in-hand with the shadow self that has hid in the corners of our mind tormenting us for so many years.

It took a lot of courage and bravery for me to face the spiritual demons that caused my suffering, especially since most of my torment was from deep soul wounds of abuse and addiction. My pain finally came to the surface as I made my way through the dark night of my soul. It was only after my spiritually infected wounds were cleansed that I was able to grow spiritually, embrace change and recover from life’s most challenging setbacks.

You owe it to yourself; find your truth.

2) The PROCESS

The process of change does not come with any guarantees, but it does come with a sense of relief for having the courage to finally say, “I need help!” I followed my intuition, which led me to a counselor who dealt with sexual trauma and a 12-Step program for direction and guidance. Asking for help from the right people allowed the frightened part of me to be in the moment of pain that, eventually, set in motion a chain reaction of feelings such as inner peace and contentment. For the first time in years I could stop running from myself. I could sit still, face what I was afraid of and surrender to the process that change required. I kept thinking that if an innocent butterfly can do it, so can I. There had to be something greater than me at work in the Universe, and I chose to believe in that power as evidence to why I didn’t have to feel so overwhelmed and frightened all the time. Eventually it worked, but I had to continue the process to of change. To stay out of my head, I chose to write about my process and do whatever it took to be of service to others. This mindset helped me stay honest with whom I’ve become through the process of discarding what no longer serves my highest good.

You’re worth the effort; embrace the steps of change.

3) The AWAKENING

Today I trust in the power that is greater than I am, the same power that keeps me sober, sane, grateful, honest, connected, vulnerable and happy, for the most part. I am still willing to learn and grow and with that commitment. I may continue to feel more pain in the process, as I undergo this perpetual state of growth to quench my soul’s undying thirst to overcome things that once caused me a tremendous amount of emotional and spiritual pain. One thing I do know from experience is that on the other side of all my fears, suffering and spiritual growing pains there is an unlimited amount of self-love, joy, peace, laughter and a continually deepening connection to the most complex part of my soul. I have learned that, in all of this change, I’ve grown to love myself as a soul-being who is worthy and deserving of everything that is good in life—even the transformational pain of spiritual and emotional soul growth.

You’re destiny in not somewhere out there; it is in your heart. Tap into this destiny and you will harness all the power of your talents, skills, passions, intellect and a new sense of awareness that will help you unleash your highest potential.

Open your eyes and free your mind; awaken to the hero inside of you.
