Clean Up Your Inner Environment

By Gregg Sanderson

“Better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you’re a fool, than to open it and remove all doubt.” —Mark Twain (among others)

The foundation of my personal and spiritual growth for the past many years has been the Living Love system as put forth by Ken Keyes in the Handbook To Higher Consciousness.

There I found a philosophy and techniques instantly available and incredibly powerful to make immediate and permanent changes in my reaction to whatever is going on in my life.

Through the years, I’ve been through a variety of Spiritual teachings, and Living Love is in total harmony with them all. It has helped me keep my focus on expressing Love, which I consider the essence and purpose of life. This month, next month, and possibly for months after that, I plan to share the beauty and power of this remarkable system.

First, an important disclaimer: I haven’t arrived anywhere. I make no claims to guru-ship or even holier than thou. Thou is plenty holy without my help, but maybe I can help you clear a few rocks from your path.

What are those metaphorical “rocks?” Buddha called them “Attachments.” Ken Keyes called them “Addictions.” I call them “needs.” and in Infinite Possibilities, we call them “Limiting Beliefs.”

No matter what you call them, they refer to anything we must have in order to be happy. Attachments steal your peace of mind; addictions cloud your perception; needs distract your focus; and limiting beliefs restrict your vision. And all of the above do all of those things.

How do we get to “higher consciousness” from there? Change the attachments to acceptance, up-level addictions to preferences, change the needs to wants, and remove the limits from beliefs.

In plain English, here’s how it works:
1. When I feel good about the way things are, my emotional reaction is positive.
2. When life doesn’t fit my pictures of how it should be, negative emotions rule.
3. I can change those unconscious pictures to include things as they are.
4. When I do, I feel positive more often and everything works better.

That sounds like a lot of work, so you could rightly say, along with most of humanity, “What’s in it for me? Why bother with all that stuff?”

I have good news, better news, and a little bit of bad news. First, the good news: You can eliminate stress in most situations. Not “reduce,” ELIMINATE. When you do, you’ll find:

  • You can have better relationships.
  • You can live longer and age more slowly.
  • You can be happy all the time if you want to be.

Now, the better news:

  • It’s easy.

And the bad news:

  • You have to do it (not just talk about it. DO IT.)

We’ll start with next month’s column.
Can you say neuroplasticity?
