We Are All Connected

By Steve Harding

As long as I have been consciously traveling down my spiritual path I have heard the phrase “we are all connected.” But truthfully, I never really thought about what that meant or why it was important.  Early on, when I visualized this I saw that all humanity was tangled up in something that looked like a huge spider web, and I knew it was important because I actually could feel the pain and joy of others all over the planet.

Wow, I could not have underestimated this concept more! “WE ARE ALL CONNECTED!” It’s sometimes called the “Unity Principle,” and it is one of the basic Universal Laws upon which all of creation operates. It is the foundation of our ability to create and, under its umbrella, we manifest everything that happens in our life! Let’s look at it in more depth.
As is with most Universal Laws, the concept of Unity is not new. One of the earliest references to it was found in the Dead Sea Scrolls, which were written around 400 BC.

This was a source quoted in the movie “The Secret,” and it states “as above, so below, as within so without, as the universe, so the soul.”  In his book The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success, Deepak Chopra quotes ancient Vedic seers as exclaiming, “I am that, you are that, all this is that and that’s all there is!” Jesus shared with us that “I and the Father are one!” All of these statements would seem to indicate that early on there was a knowing by sages that everything is made of the same stuff.

It’s All Energy
Now let’s move to the late 1800s and early 1900s with names like Max Planck, Albert Einstein, Max Born and Werner Heisenberg who, among others, developed the science known as Quantum Mechanics.

In simple terms, Quantum Mechanics says that everything in the Universe is really made up of energy; nothing is solid. It is all “quantum soup,” including us by the way.

For those of us who look for “scientific evidence” of the idea that we are all connected, this should help.

So, if we look from the point of view that we are all made up of energy and there are no edges or well-defined lines in this energy, then we are really a sort of wiggle, fluctuation or whirlpool in a larger sea of “quantum soup.” This energy makes up the entire universe so all of “that” is our extended body.

We are not just connected to everything, we ARE everything.

There are a couple of interesting characteristics about this “quantum soup.” First, it is a flowing vibrating energy; nothing is solid. The human nervous system, using our five senses, “freezes” this soup into solid particles that we then perceive as our solid world—our reality, if you will, which includes our physical bodies.

Moreover, our nervous system freezes this energy into solid particles that relate to what we expect to see based on our history of observation and experience. This is important: We see what we “expect” to see. Again, to quote “The Secret,” the ancient Mayan Indians could not “see” the Spanish ships approaching on the water because they had no experience with which to compare that particular vibration of energy. It is interesting that their “Shamans” or Spiritual leaders were the first to see the ships.

Another point to support this is that no one sees any particular object the same. When you ask five people to describe something you will get five different interpretations all based on the “expectations” or history of those individuals relating to that object.

So, assuming Einstein and his fellow scientists are correct, we actually freeze our extended body into what we expect it to look like. In other words, it could be said that our expectations are a result of our thoughts. A logical conclusion could then be reached that our thoughts, using our five senses, determine how we freeze the “quantum soup” into what we see as our daily life.

The Importance of Thoughts
How important does that make our thoughts? How critical does it become to pay attention to what we think? Scientists who study this sort of thing say we have between 50,000 and 60,000 thoughts a day. The interesting thing is that 90 percent of the thoughts we have today are the same thoughts we had yesterday and will have tomorrow. If we focus on this for a moment, we will see the truth in that statement. We have really turned ourselves into bundles of subconscious reactions to our external stimulus. This, for lack of a better word, non-thinking approach to our every day existence could result in our life seeming to repeat itself over and over in cycles. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

The key to breaking these cycles, since our thoughts are responsible for freezing the energy into reality, is to understand that each thought we have generates a choice.

Instead of just continuing on autopilot, we must become present to the choices available and select the one that will “freeze” into the reality we want.

For example, when your mother pushes your “anger” button instead of choosing a reaction that freezes into stress and confrontation stop for a second and consciously choose love and compassion and the “frozen” reality will reflect peace and harmony—at least after some practice on your part. This is a muscle that is weak in most of us.

A scientific study conducted by the Weismann Institute in 1998 concluded that in the quantum world the observer in an experiment affects the outcome. We can become conscious observers of our thoughts and powerfully affect the outcome of this experiment we call our life. We are not just connected; we are integrated and we create our own world in every moment—by choice.
