The Astonishing Power of Music

Have Faith: My Gratitude Story

It was September of 2016, and I was in the midst of completing the most involved and extensive music project of my life so far. As a girl who REALLY likes to be prepared ahead of time whenever possible, my little world became a bit rattled as yet another production day had to be rescheduled due to unforeseen circumstances. “Relax, girl,” I would tell myself, “remember that things ALWAYS work out for you when you let go and allow.” EVERY time I have “let go and let God” (AKA, I chill the $%^& out and ALLOW), it has been amazing to watch the impossible morph into the POSSIBLE. Unfortunately, my anal-litcal (disconnected) side seemed to be muting the voice of my knowing—and this chick was starting to freak out…

Once I came to my senses and decided to step away for a few minutes to clear my head, as there was certainly NO way anything good could come from being wound tighter than a spool of steel thread, I asked for clarity and help. I then got off the subject for a few minutes and let myself focus on something light and easy. In the back of my mind, however, I knew the clock was ticking and that I really needed to get back in the studio ASAP, so with my little prayer/intention of being open to guidance and flow, I stepped back in to the mix. It was at this time that the Universe intervened…

Of all of the 27 tracks we could choose, John suggested working on “Have Faith,” and before we could take the next step with this piece, our first order of business would be to simply sit and listen to the song from beginning to end. Even though I had fully intended to listen with my “editing/upgrading” ears, my heart and spirit took the reins to ensure that I really listened:

“No matter how dark the night may be
No matter how lost all hope may seem
Have faith, have faith

No matter how things may look right now
Even when you just can’t see how
Have faith, have faith

Faith opens doors that had once seemed closed forever
And out of just no way, a way will be made!

So no matter what they may say today
I know in my heart this is our day!
Love gave me this dream, and love can see it through!…”

I then got to hear a special message that had spontaneously found its way into the instrumental break of this song during the recording process:

“I know it’s hard to see, but I know this dream is meant to be.
You’ve got to trust me—it’s going to be okay…”

And then I heard the last part:

“Faith can move mountains that once seemed immovable
And where there’s love there can be miracles!
We’ve made it too far to turn and run
For nothing is stronger than this love
This is our time and this dream will come true!…

…Have faith. Have faith.”

By the time we had listened to the entire song, my face was wet with tears. Once again, this song—and the power of music—transformed my state of being from one of worry and fear to one of hope and openness, much as it did earlier this year when I needed a reminder during the early stages of our new home-buying journey.

From this new stance of possibility, John and I forged ahead to do a month’s worth of production work in less than a week’s time. And by Tuesday evening, October 4th, what had only days earlier seemed like an impossible task become a REALITY.

That night, as I sat around a beautiful dining room table in South Tampa with Fran Taylor Powers (the writer/director/producer of “12*”) and a wonderful group of women who had agreed to do a preliminary table read (a read-through of the script with the songs in their proper places), I got to witness our intrepid volunteers laugh, cry and completely immerse themselves in the story and music—and then surprise the heck out of me by singing along with several of the songs, even after only hearing them for the first time THAT night!! Wow…

…And to think that soon I would also get to work with an entire cast who would infuse their own characters, colors and passions into these songs and then get to see the show—and music—in its full glory on December 1st!!!

It truly is amazing what can happen when you “Have Faith” and ALLOW the power of music to work its magic.

The Bottom Line: The Astounding Power of MUSIC

Whether the small, subtle flame of a candle
Or the inferno of a million hearts on fire,
The hearth that warms your home and spirit,
Or the catalyst that summons your wildest desires

Music can provide the spark
To illuminate even the darkest spaces
For it is a beacon that has the power to speak
And burn through illusion to the core that transcends all ages

For music is the fire of love in motion
And when allowed to blaze to its full glory and light
Behold how its sweet embers can stir the soul
And see another life ignite!

I believe that music can ignite a fire of epic proportions in the human spirit, and that hearing just the right song at just the right time, really can transform your state of being, experience, and even LIFE.

What if you decided to listen more carefully to the songs your heart and soul would like for YOU to hear?

What if you danced to the rhythms of YOUR deepest knowing and truest passions?

Here’s to really hearing YOUR song; to deciding to “Have Faith;” and to remembering to thank God/Source/Life for the astonishing power of MUSIC—and for EVERYTHING that makes life beautiful.
