Growing with Reiki

By Sylvia Lane

I am a Reiki aficionado. I love everything there is about Reiki because it works with Universal energy to bring about healing. This hands-on spiritual practice was introduced in 1922 by a Japanese Buddhist named Mikao Usui, and I have used it for many years to heal, comfort, and provide strength to myself and others. I am still deeply in love with Reiki to this day—but I am human, and I still have many lessons to learn and master.

A couple of years ago, I decided to start my own practice. On the day that my doors opened for business, I should have been filled with joy, excitement, and all good emotions. Instead, all I felt was a mounting fear, followed by waves of despair and regret. What had I done?

As the days turned into weeks and then months, my stubborn nature kicked in, and I was determined to make it work. But I did not enjoy it, not for one moment. Filled with looming bills, lack of clients, and wayward staff, I found that I was questioning myself more than ever. My vibrational levels had plummeted, and nothing seemed to work. Everything felt so hard.

I wanted out, but had no idea how and, more importantly, what I was going to do then? I had been a therapist for so long; I had no idea what other career opportunities were out there. I was burnt out and exhausted, but deep within my heart I knew I still loved working with my clients. I was hesitant to give up, but did not really want to continue.

I was offered a free consultation by a business coach.

At the end, she turned around and told me that I did not have the right attitude to work with her; I was too focused on the negative and had a defeatist attitude.

She wished me well in my business before getting off the phone. I was devastated, but today I thank her from the bottom of my heart. You see, even though she was not prepared to help me, she gave me an inkling of what to do—change my attitude. (Ha, now that is easier said than done!)

But at least I had found a starting point. Rather obvious to some, but a revelation to me. With that knowledge I also became aware of how complacent I had become with Reiki. I had gotten so carried away with trying to run a business I hardly ever did any Reiki on myself. It occurred to me that Reiki would be perfect in helping me to cope with my stress levels and stay healthier!

At the same time I discovered life coaching and started a program. Each week I began to notice that for every new technique we learned there was a corresponding Reiki technique to use.

Wow, I was so blown away. You see, in all the years I had been working with Reiki, I understood it to mean that you could “heal the body, mind, and soul from imbalance, to cast out illness and bring about good health.” I now began to understand that Reiki was not just about healing—you could use it to transform and scale your own mountains. I was hooked!

The change it brought about in my life was phenomenal. Business started to flow, I felt more energized, motivated, and happy. My work-life balance got back on track; finances improved. I became eager to experience life again!

How can Reiki help us align to our life purpose?

In Traditional Reiki, I work with energy centers known as the Haras. The word “Hara” means abdomen. From an energetic point of view, a Hara is referred to as the “Source of Life.” There are three Haras, the lower, middle, and upper, and they are located in the stomach, heart, and head, respectively. Linking all three Haras helps to create unity and balance, and allows you to live in divine accordance with you life’s purpose. However, to really obtain true balance, the lower Hara must be strong.

Imagine three stones all resting on top of one another. If the top stone is the largest, all three will topple over. But by stacking with the largest stone at the bottom, like a pyramid, the configuration is stable. It is the same with Haras; ensuring the lower Hara is the strongest leads to stability. Often, when people only work on developing their psychic intuition (upper Hara) and ignore the lower hara, they run the risk of “toppling over” and becoming scattered.

When your Haras are healthy, you will feel healthy. You begin to experience more days that remain in the flow, and find it easier to attract what you want into your life.

Try this meditation exercise to connect the Haras:

Sit down in a comfortable position. Feel yourself let go of any expectations. If you already know Reiki, feel free to draw the power symbol around you; otherwise, just focus on your breathing.

Imagine a sphere of golden light located just outside the lower Hara (approximately three finger widths below your navel). Breathe the golden light from the sphere into the lower Hara and sense/see the Hara fill up and expand with the golden light. On the out breath connect back into the sphere and then bring more light into the Hara on the next in breath. Repeat until you can feel the Hara vibrate.

Next, breathe in from the sphere into the lower Hara and use your intuition to guide the light/energy up through the lower Hara, into the middle Hara (by the heart center). Breathe out filling the Hara and then repeat until it is vibrating strongly.

Then breathe from the sphere into the lower Hara, up into the middle Hara, and then move the energy/light into the upper Hara. Continue until it is full and vibrating.

Now feel the golden light expand and encase your whole body in a sphere of golden light. Sit in this space for a while.

Reiki is a truly amazing modality that has brought so much balance and harmony to my life, as well as growth and transformation. I warmly invite you to explore Reiki to see what it can do for you.
