Those Darn “C” Words (Change and Commitment)

By Rev. Marla Sanderson

How do you feel about the C-words?

“Change” and “Commitment” can be frightening, but used together correctly, they’ll work magic for you.

There’s a simple truth I’ve had proven to me time and time again.

“Life will always get better for you if you let it.”

That’s where the C-words come in.

You always have the possibility for a greater life. You can have more happiness, joy, prosperity, and love than you ever imagined, but you must be willing to embrace the change and commit to the new.

Hiding out to avoid change can become a way of life. Even though it won’t be much of a life, at least there will be no disappointments.

I once knew a lady who was so frightened of change that she could never show up for anything. Every time an opportunity came her way, she’d find a way to avoid it.

The world threatened her. She would rather sit and watch the bus go by than get on to see where it would take her. She made up creative excuses for everything.

One of her favorites was to get sick. It wasn’t intentional, of course. It just sort of…happened. And when you’re sick, people can’t expect much of you, can they? It’s not really your fault.

I can’t go to school today. I’m sick.

I can’t go work today. I’m sick.

I can’t go to the party. I’m sick.

I can’t go out on a date. I’m sick.

As she continued to avoid every “call of life” she became weaker and more fearful, and sank deep into loneliness and despair.

She didn’t know the simple fact that life will always get better if you let it.

But change itself without total commitment to the idea that things will get better for you leaves you with something like a 50/50 chance of improvement.

Here is where your Power lies. Throw out your doubts and reclaim your commitment to a greater good. Turn your thoughts away from the fears that rise up and remind yourself there is a positive power working in your favor.

Welcome change and commit to something better. It will help you flow with the situation, and not resist it. Remember, change is not your enemy. Stagnation is.

No matter how things look, hold to the idea that all change happens for your greater good.

Because it does.

Then commit to “something better,” and be open to whatever that might be.

Carry a note in your pocket that says, “The natural way of Life is for things to get better,” and read it often. Use your own words but use them. Over and over and over until you’ve turned the corner and see the results.

A little practice at this, and I promise you will begin to look at life as a great adventure—with every shakeup or challenge a signal that more and better is on the way.
