Practical Spirituality: Notso Therapy

By Rev. Marla Sanderson

In today’s world of fast and easy communication, we are barraged with messages of illness or the threat of it. Conversations about illness are so common it’s easy to get the idea that something’s out to get us, and the media will scare us every chance they get.

Science of Mind teaches that the more you think about something, the more of it you draw into your life.

When fear gets ‘hold of you, it can dominate your thoughts and supply enough emotional energy to activate an attraction to the very thing you don’t want.

We also teach that you are a powerful conscious being, capable of choosing your thoughts. As you consciously scrutinize your thoughts, you become a positive, creative force in your own life.

My first choice of alternative healing methods is one I do for myself and it doesn’t cost a cent. I don’t even have to make an appointment or set aside time for it! I call it Notso Therapy. Here’s an example:

We get a steady diet of negativity about health from TV. It doesn’t make you want the sickness, of course, but it draws you in emotionally with messages of fear.
This is the time I employ Notso Therapy.

I say to the TV. “NOT SO!”

When I talk back to the TV, I don’t mind saying it aloud, but if I’m listening to a friend’s upset over a health condition, I find it better to keep the “Not so” inside my own head. He or she might not understand.

You can use Notso Therapy in many different situations. If someone insults you, tell yourself “Not so. I’m OK.” When you hear about the dangers in the world, “Not so. I am guided, guarded and protected.”

When you shop and find something too expensive, declare, “Not so. There’s always enough!”

You can also just say “No!” or “Not me.” “I don’t need that.” “Cancel!” or just plain “Get outtahere!” Do it as quickly as you can and mean it.

After a few “Not sos,” you can tell when the job is done. Your mind will turn to something else, and you won’t feel the need to resist the original thought anymore.

Your mind directs the show whether you consciously know it or not, and that’s the core of it.

Something responds to your thoughts and produces them in your world of affairs. You don’t need to know how it works to use it. You only need to practice it.
